The Tournament

The Memorial Tournament is a 2 week competition using the Stableford system of scoring with each player submitting their total points for both weeks. This is a full handicap tournament, net score on each hole is used to calculate points.

A Stableford competition is a golf tournament in which the object is to get the highest score. That's because in Stableford, golfers are awarded points based on their scores in relation to a par at each hole.  The USGA and R&A define Stableford points in this manner:

• Net Double Bogey (2 over par) or worse (or no score returned) - 0 points
• Net Bogey (1 over par) - 1 point
• Net Par - 2 points
• Net Birdie (1 under par) - 3 points
• Net Eagle (2 under par) - 4 points
• Net Albatross (3 under par) - 5 points
• Net Condor (4 under par) or better - 6 points

2016 Champion: Anthony Sigona

2015 runner-up Peter Ennis jumped out to an early lead, shooting a gross 79, which was good for 46 points. Hot on his heels were Linda shearman (43 points), Anthony Sigona (42 points) and Tom Condon (41 points). A few others were still in the hunt at 39, but they would need some help.

Round 1 Scores

With Linda and Tom faltering in the second round, it seemed likely that Peter would claim his third Memorial title. Anthony wouldn't let that happen, as his second round 79 scored him 47 points.  Peter's closing round 38 was good enough for second place.

2015 Champion: Al Fricchione

Defending champion Tom Gramolini looked to continue the trend of back-to back champions. After an opening round 34, he trailed the leaders by 5 points. Rob Cohlan and Al Fricchione both had 39 points in Round 1, with Ron Zappula (38) and Bruce Greenberg (37) close behind.

Round 1 Scores

Cohlan, Fricchione and Greenberg were neck and neck after 9 holes in round 2, but Peter Ennis made a late charge in the round. Peter's 39 points were good enough to move him into second place, as Al's final round 36 was enough to win  the tournament.

2014 Champion: Tom Gramolini

This year's Memorial was a two round marathon requiring something rarely seen at Saxon Woods:  one good round followed by another.  Most of us are capable of breaking net par on one Saturday, but the next is most frequently a journey to the dark side of golfdom.  This year both Andy and Tom managed to get net under par two weeks in a row.  But Tom's second round was three strokes better than Andy's and that was his margin of victory.

Tom shot a wonderful gross 77/net 67 to go with last week's net 69.  No matter how you count the points that's a back to back performance to be proud of.  Brian has put together all the scores and you'll find links below.  But we didn't have to wait until all the cards were in to congratulate Tom on that great performance.  Well done, Mr. Gramolini.  Tom adds this major to his 2011 President's Cup victory.

The new scoring system assigned points to each hole's score, but the principle was the same as usual: par is one better than bogie, birdie is one better than par....  In the end points produced the same results as medal play:

Player Round 1 Round 2 Total Pts      Total Net
Gramolini, T 38 40 78 136
Eisenberg 38 37 75 139
Ennis 32 42 74 140
DiFiore 35 38 73 141
Herschenfeld 38 34 72 142
Sigona 35 35 70 144
Valenti 35 34 69 145
Leopold 33 36 69 145
Smith 31 37 68 144
Goldberg, A 30 38 68 144
Brandwene 35 33 68 144
